Replace the Cord, Not the Mike!

The Nuance PowerMic III is an essential tool for the use of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Medical Practice Edition and Dragon Medical One. Although there are other speech microphones available for these products, the PowerMic III is the microphone that is most suited for these products based upon usability and feature sets. Unfortunately, the USB cable can fail just beyond the protective rubberized extension at the base of the microphone, particularly when it is routinely stored in a tight space (such as a backpack). The list price of the PowerMic III is over $400, thus to replace the microphone in order to deal with a USB cable failure is a very expensive proposition indeed!
When I learned about the USB replacement cable with the proprietary connector for the PowerMic III from ECS at less than $30, I was overjoyed. This cable is available in the 3 foot and 9 foot length. It comes with the tools that are needed to partially disassembled the microphone and replace the cable. There is an available video online for those that find repairing small electronic devices challenging. The entire replacement process takes less than 10 minutes. Surprisingly, replacement cable appears to me to be more robust and less vulnerable to failure than the original equipment cable. I have had to replace the cable on two different PowerMic III speech microphones and both of which began working flawlessly immediately after he assembly. 5 stars!
